Parents Guide to Room 23
Classwork vs. Homework
September 06, 2007
PLEASE READ THIS FIRST! :-) It is important that my parents understand how we track our assignments in room 23. My students are familiar with all of this as I write all of our work on my white board. I write our new work up daily which allows for my students who have been absent to come in and see what they missed without having to ask anyone. For example an assignment that we do on Monday will stay up on my white board until the following Monday, and so on. My students are also given a grade log which allows for them to keep track of all their assignments as well as their grade(s) per assignment and/or overall grade in the class.
Homework vs. Class work: Generally, in Math my kids have work everyday. I do allow time for them to get started on their assignment in class (usually around 15 minutes) so it is possible that they will finish some assignments in class and not have homework. However, feel free to check their work to make sure it's getting done. In Science we work a little differently - we will do most of our work in class, sometimes individually, sometimes with buddies and sometimes as a class. You should NOT expect to see homework in Science on a daily basis.
I have folders hanging on my wall as you enter my classroom. If my students are absent on a day that we work on a worksheet, they can look in the corresponding folder (labeled Monday - Friday) and pick up their worksheet.
So, on my homework page our Casimir web site, and on the white board in my room, the ♥'s are my form of a bullet and I use them in place of an assignment number (for things like notes taken in class, when we read together, or sometimes projects or activities). This way my kids know what we are working on, even if it's not an actual assignment.
All the numbers in parenthesis ( ) are the assignment numbers that
correspond with your child's grade log. This is also how I keep
track of assignments in my grade book.
Please, if you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me kgarcia@teacher.tusd.org - I'd love to talk to you! :-)
